Reducing Disadvantage by Maximising the Potential of Young People

 Sunshine Coast Drink Safe Coalition

The Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership is the lead agency coordinating the Sunshine Coast Drink Safe Coalition representing over 30 service providers from across the region.

The Sunshine Coast Drink Safe Coalition aims to promote and embed a safe drinking culture within young people and the Sunshine Coast community. Benefits will include a reduction in binge drinking and an awareness of attractive alternatives to assist young people to enjoy their community in health enhancing ways.

 The Sunshine Coast Drink Safe Coalition promotes safe drinking messages through:

  • Engagement with young people to develop activities promoting a drink safe message by young people, for young people
  • Development of partnerships to increase capacity of the local community and associated hospitality, sporting, education and community service industries to support the Drink Safe No Regrets message.
  • Working towards cultural change through encouraging community ownership of concepts

 Summer of Sound-

16 young local bands played 12 hours of live music to more than 600 young people over 8 weeks at 4 Sunshine Coast locations.

 Outdoor Cinema-

An inflatable cinema screen providing screenings of popular films to young people during school holidays and university semesters to offer enjoyable entertainment at minimum cost.

 Manifest Youth Arts Festival-

The Manifest Youth Arts Festival celebrating National Youth Week across the Coast, incorporated visual arts, music and film to showcase local youth talent across several events, schools and the wider community.

 Caloundra Music Festival’s The Village, presented by Festuri-

The Art of No Regrets display, youth workshops and activities that engage youth participation are currently being planned for this years festival.

 Youth Health Checks-

Free Youth Health Checks provide the opportunity for young people to access information about their health and wellbeing in a relaxed and youth friendly environment. Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are available to provide information and referrals at no cost. Competitions, games and live music ensure the Youth Health Checks are interactive, entertaining and enjoyable for young people.  This is a collaborative approach by the Sunshine Coast Drink Safe Coalition, FOCUS (Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice) and Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership.



Young Women’s Strategy

The Young Women’s Strategy (YWS) is an initiative of Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership and Life Bridge, in response to identified concerns for issues and challenges facing young Sunshine Coast women.

The YWS is aimed at providing:

  • Training
  • Mentoring 
  • Case Management

To empower young women for a positive future by increasing their self confidence, personal power and support networks.

Target Group:

10 girls aged 12 to 15 years who have been identified as potentially at high risk of personal harm due to:

  • Demonstrating decision making that is potentially damaging to their wellbeing
  • Engagement in unsafe health and personal activities

 Project 1 will be conducted between July 2010 and March 2011.

Sunshine Coast Youth Summit

The Sunshine Coast Youth Summit is an annual one day event developed by young people for young people, in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership, Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE, Family Planning Queensland and Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

The Summit is organised to inspire and empower Sunshine Coast young people aged 15-25 to discuss and develop solutions to youth issues, and be heard by local, State and Federal decision makers and service providers.

The Sunshine Coast Youth Summit 2010 will be held on October 15 at the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE Mooloolaba.

Issues to be discussed at the Summit 2010 as identified by the results of the Sunshine Coast Youth Summit Survey are:

  • Drugs and Alcohol
  • Education, Training and Employment
  • Recreation and Entertainment
  • Resilience and Wellbeing – Sexuality and Relationships, Mental Health and Mental Illness, Body Image and Self Esteem

EMMA – Educating, Mentoring Mothering Adolescents

The EMMA program is delivered by Life Bridge in partnership with Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership to provide support, mentoring and access to educational courses for pregnant young women and young mothers.

EMMA aims to educate and empower young women to provide a better future for their children and themselves by:

  • Providing practical support to young mothers during the preparation for birth and becoming a parent
  • Developing networks for the mother through a mentoring program to provide support and guidance after the birth of her child
  • Providing a case management service to mother and child for 2 years
  • Facilitating participation in education options focused on development of life skills

Future Leaders

Future Leaders is a program developed by the Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership with the support of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

Future Leaders provides an opportunity for young people to become our future leaders and retain local talent on the Sunshine Coast. The Program aims to create connections between young people, community, government and business leaders to share wisdom and broaden horizons.

Participants develop their leadership and project management skills with a view to achieving career development and success. At the completion of the ten-month program, the Future Leaders have developed a detailed career plan, coordinated a community service or event and completed a  Certificate IV Project Management.


Y. – Youth Paper

Y. is an innovative initiative of the Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership and Sunshine Coast Daily.

Y. aims to provide a group of young people with the opportunity to gain skills and experience in newspaper production and offer local young people  a positive forum to voice their views, issues and stories through the publication of regular articles.


Youth on the Move – Hinterland Mini Bus

The Youth on the Move minibus provides flexible and affordable transport options for young people, youth services and educational facilities operating in the Hinterland. Young people susceptible to social isolation and experiencing financial hardship have priority access to the Bus. The aim of the Bus is to reduce social isolation and facilitate access to services and supports that are not available in the Hinterland area.

The YOTM bus is a SCYP bus but is housed and managed by the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. A User Agreement with insurance, license and duty of care provisions must be completed and authorised prior to use of the bus.
